The Africa Economics Unit (CAFCE, part of the Africa Vice Presidency) is hiring a Program Assistant. The Program Assistant will be one of a group of economists and strategists working together under a Regional Economics Manager. The Department has three principal functions:

  • Diagnostics and strategy: Undertake country private sector diagnostics, country climate development reports, and support country management units in producing and updating IFC country strategies and World Bank Group Country Partnership Frameworks;
  • Support to operations: Support regional operations by reviewing the economic, development and strategic impact of IFC operations, as well as contributing to the economic analysis of IFC projects in project documents and board papers.
  • Support to Africa VPU senior management: briefings on country engagement, external communication, relationships with the World Bank and MIGA.

Duties and Accountabilities:


  • The Program Assistant will report directly to the Regional Economics Manager and will provide full administrative and logistical support, coordinate the schedule of meetings and appointments; ensure effective time management; ensure relevant documents are available for meetings
  • Coordinate closely (and back up when needed) with other ACS staff in the field and in DC, and with other departments and business units across the WBG as needed.
  • Provide the necessary support to the Regional Directors, Country Managers and Senior Staff whenever they are in DC
  • Coordinate with ED offices and IFC/WB counterparts during spring and annual meetings, uploading tables in meeting briefs and following up with staff for timely clearance
  • Organize and manage team meetings, arrange webex, monitor and follow-up on issues and priorities as needed
  • Support the team in preparing materials for internal and external distribution, including the compilation of data.
  • Handle the logistics for retreats, seminars, workshops.
  • Place orders for office supplies through eServices and maintain its orderly upkeep.
  • Organize travel arrangements and logistics, working closely with Amex and, as necessary, liaising with country offices and external parties.
  • Assist team with consultants contracting
  • PCard Administration

Program Support:

  • Assist the team with data annexes and country project information for regional updates, country strategy, annual and spring meetings
  • Keep track of country diagnostics and strategies and related meetings for the region.
  • Maintain a database of key business documents/deliverables on the shared drive (including strategies and project related information)
  • Assist with simple formatting of briefs and reports.
  • Obtain key data/reports from WBG library to inform preparation of strategy documents e.g. board papers, IEG reports

Selection Criteria


Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree with 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to retrieve, gather and obtain information from various sources.
  • Demonstrated team spirit, strong desire to work in a team environment, and ability to develop professional networks to improve effectiveness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and sound judgement.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Reliability, resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Strong attention to detail and to maintaining high quality standards.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of flexibility and demonstrated capacity to handle a variety of concurrent activities, judge priorities, seek guidance and take initiative in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written), including ability to draft, proofread and edit correspondence.
  • Good computer skills; proficiency with various software technologies such as MS Office, Outlook, One Drive, XL and other standard office productivity and connectivity software.  Ability to learn quickly new software applications.
  • Prior experience as Program Assistant within the World Bank Group would be an advantage
  • Technology and systems knowledge – Has advanced proficiency of latest technology relevant to assigned responsibilities. Demonstrates initiative in learning and or supporting implementation of emerging technology and systems relevant to effective work of the unit.
