  • Part III should be completed by the contributors who have dependents or children. You will be required to provide the names of the children and their dates of birth.
  • The completed registration form should be taken to the NHIF branch office.

    To register for the NHIF services on the NHIF portal, you must fulfill the following requirements.

    • You must complete the registration form and attach photos of yourself, your spouse, and your children.
    • Attach copies of the National Identity Card or passport for both the contributor and the spouse
    • You will be required to attach a copy of the birth certificate for each child. A birth notification is acceptable for children under the age of 6 years.
    • If you are employed and are registering into the system for the first time, you will need an introduction letter stamped by the employer.

If you are visiting the NHIF portal online for the first time, you need to register for the service. Follow this procedure to register for the NHIF online self-service.

  • Open the NHIF self-service portal on your browser
  • Click on the create account tab
  • Choose individual member registration
  • Fill in your personal details, including your name, National ID No, email, and mobile number.
  • Create an e-wallet pin that you will use to login into the portal
  • Click on Register to complete the registration process

How do I log into my NHIF account?

Existing NHIF users should follow this simple procedure;

  • Launch your browser
  • Go to the NHIF registration portal
  • Select Hospital Login

How to reset NHIF forgot password on NHIF portal

  • Compose a new SMS on your mobile phone
  • Type the letters “ID” and then space
  • Type your ID number or passport number
  • Send the message to 21101

It is important to note that this service is not free, and you will be charged Kshs. 10 to use the service.

How to reactivate NHIF membership

If you work in the informal sector and have not contributed for more than 12 months, you need to reactivate your NHIF membership. You will need to pay at least Kshs 1500 to reactivate your card.

The payments can be made using M-PESA, or you can deposit the money in Equity Bank, KCB, Co-operative Bank, and National Bank. After making the payment, you will resume using your NHIF card after two months or 60 days.

How to choose NHIF hospitals online on the NHIF portal

As a member of the National Health Insurance Fund, you can choose your preferred outpatient facility. The health insurer has three hospital categories including:

  • Government hospitals
  • Faith-based and medium-cost private facilities
  • High-cost private facilities

  • Go to NHIF Self-care Online portal
  • Enter your National Identification number
  • NHIF will send you a One-Time Password (OTP) to your phone via your registered phone number
  • Input OTP then select Click to Verify

  • Choose your preferred NHIF hospital.

How to change NHIF hospital online on the NHIF portal

Various factors may influence your decision to change your current outpatient medical facility. In such cases, you will have to choose another hospital in your county via the NHIF self-care online portal. Remember, you have two chances to change your hospital in a year.

To change your NHIF hospital, follow these steps;

  • On your browser, go to NHIF Self-care Online Portal
  • Enter your ID number
  • The national health insurer will send an OTP via SMS to your registered number.
  • Input OTP then verify
  • Select the facilities tab
  • Choose the county where the hospital is located
  • Select the change NHIF hospital option and choose your preferred facility.

How to make payments to the NHIF account

To pay your monthly contributions to NHIF, you will need to top up the E-wallet account. To do this, you will need to follow this procedure.

  • Click on the E-wallet tab after logging into the self-service portal
  • Enter the phone number, PIN, and the amount of money that you wish to top up.
  • You will be prompted to choose the payment channel to use when topping up the E-wallet account. You should then select Visa card, Mastercard, Airtel money, or M-PESA.

How to pay the monthly contribution amount on the NHIF portal

Follow this procedure to pay your monthly contribution NHIF charges on the online portal.

  • Go to the quick links options and choose the make payment option
  • Click on the individual contributions payment tab
  • Enter the NHIF membership number and validate it
  • Enter the amount of money that you wish to pay
  • Enter the wallet pin
  • Click on the submit payment tab to complete the process

How to pay NHIF Via M-PESA

You can easily pay your NHIF monthly contribution through M-PESA. Follow the procedure below to pay the contribution via M-PESA.

  • Go to the M-PESA Menu on your mobile phone
  • Select the pay bill option
  • Enter the NHIF business no, which is 200222
  • In account no. section, key in the national identity number of the contributor
  • Enter the amount that you wish to contribute
  • Enter the M-PESA pin
  • Confirm if all the details are correct, and then press OK
  • You will receive a confirmation message from M-PESA showing that the transaction was successful.

Payment of claims

NHIF Claims are usually submitted by the hospitals directly to NHIF after the contributor has been discharged from the health care facility. NHIF examines the claims to ensure validity before payment.

NHIF strives to ensure that all the claims are paid within 14 days. The members who opt to clear their hospital bills can launch a general claim directly to NHIF for reimbursement.
